Techniques in verifying original dials

A great condition dial: words must be clear and follow the official font style

The first sight of a watch is the dial. Hence, condition of a dial is critical factor in attracting eye balls. Same rules, 2 missions in checking a dial:

1) check authenticity  or being re-done

2) grade the condition

Condition is the prime factor

Take Rolex as example, letters on dial follow a rigid writing style. Once learnt, you can figure out whether the dial is original or not easily.

Words on lower portion and lumnious dot at bottom. Lum dot is best to be semi spherical shape.

Check all dots. All are intact?

Most words were printed with epoxy ink. It should be of embossed nature. Can you see the ups and downs of the letters? They are not flat plain. Note the light reflection of letters.

Note the condition of the 3 hands

a) check degree of aging and oxidation

b) is the lum material on hands smooth? Any repainting site?

c) is the hands and dial match in colour?

Letters were formed by piling up gold colour material. This is called gilt dial.

Great condition dials must be:

a) letters conform with official fonts

b) with embossed nature (note the light reflection of letters)

Basically, there are 2 types of dilas

a) matt base in dull tone floor colour

b) shiny floor base

A shiny base dial with gilt gold letters

A shiny silver grey dial with white letters

Excellent condition: radial lines on dial easily seen
